Where it all began...

Updated: May 22, 2021

Dear Mandrin Minion,

As a young kid I was already fascinated by sounds. I can remember recording on my simple cassette-recorder, dubbing it with another recorder and finally resulting in just a lot of noise. But I could spend hours doing that. Now, 40 years later, we are in the digital era. We can duplicate, copy and edit sounds on our phones and computers without any loss in quality. When I started doing music again about 2 years ago, I found out that I can run a digital multi-track studio on my laptop. This made my childhood dreams come true. The possibilities are unlimited and all for free!

I spend hours in "the Loft" in France where my home studio is based. I started making recordings with my "simple" keyboard, tried to do some singing and started composing songs. In October 2020 I became a member of Kompoz, a platform where you can meet other musicians and collaboratively record arrangements. My pieces of work are becoming to sound more and more satisfying. Thanks to good musical friends and sharing knowledge and ideas and an unlimited source of energy and creativity.

But many times I struggle with the question; "Why am I doing this?"

The answer to this is in fact simple and goes back to my childhood days; "I am just fascinated by sounds". The process of creating a piece of music, playing with sounds, colours arrangements and compositions gives a lot of satisfaction and relaxation.

The difficult bit is the end-result. In fact, in my view a piece of music is never finished. It can always sound better, or different. I can make it longer or shorter, higher or lower. It is not always easy to hear myself singing, but I love to do it.

So I don't really know what to do with all my "finished" pieces of music. Who is interested in listening to me?

That is the reason why I created this website. It is a platform where I can present the productions that I create with fellow musicians. I also like to explain a bit about the process of creation. Because for me the creative process is much more interesting then the end result. I would like to get in touch with my listeners. Get feedback and new ideas.

That is enough writing for now! It is time to listen to some music.

Cheers,

Matty
